Thermochromatic Fabrics

In this case thermochromatic PLA was used on a 3d printer to print this wall or roof segment. The surface undulates and opens at several occasions. When hot air is applied, the aerodynamic shape changes the wind flow and wherever the air goes and the material’s temperature passes 30°C the surface turns from dark grey to white. This principle could be applied to any building skin by thermochromatic paint. When applied the building’s appearance changes due to solar radiation and air flow temperatures, indicating a specific environmental condition at each location. Paired with lose panels, which move when wind passes over a façade like this could indicate both temperature and air flow conditions which further could be utilized to identify and control inhabitable zones
